Controlling the crane work zone is non-negotiable. When swing radius, load paths, and access aren’t controlled, incident risk climbs fast.

Most common crane-related incidents:
- Struck by counterweight (swing radius)
- Struck by suspended load
- Equipment-to-equipment contact
- Unauthorized entry into lift zone
- Vehicles entering crane setup area
- Loss of load control due to congestion or poor conditions
Barricades and warning devices are what keep people out of harm’s way.
Barricades
- Fence-type: Use for swing radius and primary lift zone (keep people out—no exceptions)
- Horse-type: Use for secondary boundaries and staging areas
- Must be visible, properly placed, and maintained at all times
Signage
Post clear, direct warnings at all access points:
- Danger – Swing Radius
- No Entry – Crane Operating Area
- Overhead Load Hazard
- Authorized Personnel Only
Signal Persons / Spotters
- Maintain clear communication with operator
- Monitor load path and personnel movement
- Keep unauthorized personnel out
- Never stand in the load path
- Coordinate when multiple spotters are used
Bottom Line
If the crane zone isn’t controlled, the lift isn’t safe. Set the boundaries, enforce them, and don’t rely on luck.
