Transforming Crane Safety Starts Here

Cranes and Slings

Cranes are used in nearly every industry because they can lift and move heavy loads efficiently. When handling large, heavy items, cranes suspend significant potential energy in the work environment. Any failure or misuse can result in property damage, serious injuries, or fatalities. Always follow safe material-handling practices when using cranes and slings.

Requirements Prior to Use

All cranes and slings must have manufacturer weight restrictions clearly labeled and visible from the ground. These limits must be followed at all times.

Only personnel trained and certified in safe crane operations are permitted to operate cranes.

Inspect cranes, slings, and hooks before each use. Check for hydraulic leaks; wear and tear; twisting or deformation; and cracked or corroded components.

Any defective lifting equipment must be removed from service to prevent use until it is repaired or replaced.

Safe Material Handling Practices

Never lift a load that exceeds the weight rating of the crane, sling, or hook.

Ensure chains, ropes, and slings are not twisted.

Review the path of travel to identify hazards or snag points, and notify employees in the area of the intended route.

Position the hoist directly over the load’s center of gravity for stability.

Keep the load close to the ground while avoiding equipment, materials, and personnel.

Move loads slowly and avoid sudden stops or jerking movements.

Never leave the controls while a load is suspended.

Do not use a crane to drag or pull a load sideways.

Never allow anyone on or under a suspended load.

After use, return the crane head to the top and store all hooks and slings in a safe location.
