Many crane incidents happen after the load leaves the ground.
The lift may be properly engineered, the crane inspected, and the rigging correctly selected—but the landing area is crowded, uneven, obstructed, or not prepared to receive the load.
Before starting a lift, the crew should confirm:
- The landing area can support the load.
- Personnel have a clear escape route.
- No one will be caught between the load and a fixed object.
- The load can be safely disconnected.
- The crane operator can maintain visibility or reliable communication.
- The area is controlled throughout the landing process.
A successful lift is not complete when the load reaches the destination. It is complete when the load is stable, secured, and the rigging is safely removed.
